ASTM E1965-98 defines non-contact thermometers, also known as infrared (IR) thermometers, as optoelectronic instruments adapted for the non-contact measurement of the temperature of a subject by utilizing infrared radiation exchange between the subject and the sensor. They allow for quick readings with the possibility of avoiding direct contact and in some cases, close proximity. Thermal scanners and forehead thermometers are examples of infrared thermometers.
